The members of Grand Valley Artists (GVA) and our twenty-nine ArtPrize artists are looking forward to giving you a truly unique art-infused experience. You see, GVA is not your typical ArtPrize venue…we are a working art studio! When you first walk into our 1600 sq. ft. gallery, you’ll find over forty juried ArtPrize entries, representing artists from New York, California, and across Michigan. But, keep walking and take a peek into our studio, where you can observe artists painting and drawing…a live clothed model or a still-life or perhaps finishing up a landscape painting started “en plein air”. Visitors should feel free to ask questions of GVA members. Many of our artists are nationally recognized…not only for their art but for their workshops, as well. GVA offers art lovers of all ages a chance to see art in the making. Come get inspired as we celebrate our 60th year of creating and sharing art in the community! Parking is free. Check the ArtPrize Events calendar to see special workshops and demonstrations being conducted during ArtPrize at GVA.

1st location: First two photos are of the east end of our terminal building, past the airline ticket counters and valet. We currently use this as an 'overflow' area with extra tables and chair, and storing extra building materials. This area is directly across from our rental car building with easy access into and out of our parking garage from either the east or west end. It also sits adjacent to our valet parking. This would be a wonderful location for a standing piece of art that needs to be kept indoors. Second location: Outdoors under our canopy along our 'Welcome Wall.' This area sits adjacent to our commercial lane of traffic so it's the place where people are being dropped off and picked up,. We are open to as many pieces of art that can fit in this area while still providing a comfortable setting. The canopy that connects the garage to the building will somewhat cover this area, but it could be exposed to weather. This would be a great venue for outdoor large pieces.

St. Mark’s has a rich history dating back to October 6, 1836, when it was incorporated as an Episcopal parish in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At that time, Grand Rapids had only 500 inhabitants. In the spring of 1840, measures were taken to construct a suitable building. A parcel of land was donated at the corner now known as Division and Pearl streets. The present building was occupied in October 1848 and was consecrated on September 9, 1849. It is the oldest public building still standing in the city. Its features include walls made with stone quarried from the Grand River and the original, hand carved woodwork that is found throughout the interior.

The Women’s City Club is a private club which resides in the historic Sweet House and offers memberships. The WCC transforms their space for ArtPrize. While the main floor retains it's historic look, but with the installation of AP art, the Auditorium is converted to a modern gallery with the addition of contemporary walls and lighting. In 2006, the Sweet House Foundation, a (501 c 3) non-profit, was established to preserve the history and architecture of the house. Martin Sweet, the original owner of the house, was a young entrepreneur when he came to Grand Rapids in 1846. He dreamed of a distinguished and spacious home for his family and in the early 1860’s built this home on the corner of Fulton and Lafayette. This Heritage Hill two-story Italianate Villa home survives as one of the remaining examples of this style of architecture in the latter part of the 19th century. For information on the house or the WCC, please call (616) 459-3321.

This year's theme is "More Than Meets The Eye." We are challenging our artists and our audience to look deeper than the surface of the work. Deeper meaning, deeper feeling as well as using the space to amplify the work and create a cohesive environment for the work but at the same time gives space for each work to stand alone. The space will have an array of works including film, installation pieces, 2D in photography, collage and paintings, murals, 3D and outdoor audience participation work. The artists we select will have varied backgrounds as well as levels of experience. It is our thought the exhibition space should glean works from beginning, emerging and established artists and combine them for one exhibit.
