For ArtPrize 2014, SiTE:LAB, two-time winner of the outstanding venue juried award, will take over The Morton, a vacant 90-year-old hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. A grand entry lobby, abandoned restaurants and commercial spaces, and a 1,500 square foot bank vault will provide the context for an exhibition of site-specific installations curated by Paul Amenta. The Morton has generously been made available to SiTE:LAB by Rockford Construction Company. GSA commissions American artists to create publicly scaled and permanently installed artworks for Federal Buildings nationwide. The incorporation of contemporary art within the nation's important civic spaces celebrates the best of American culture and exemplifies how democratic societies benefit immeasurably from the unique, creative talents of individual citizens. Federal Buildings are public buildings, meant to be enjoyed and utilized by the people of this nation. ArtPrize presents a unique opportunity to encourage people to visit the Federal Building and stroll the grounds to view the artwork. On permanent display on the west lawn is the large sculpture Motu Viget by Mark DiSuvero.
