Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Wesley brings his own unique style to this year’s ArtPrize competition. Though Wesley took art in high school and pursued a few leisure art classes, he is primarily a self-taught artist. When it comes to art, Wesley believes “you learn till you die.” He admittedly does not emphasize planning his work, but rather begins and allows his works to take on their own shape. At the suggestion of another painter, Wesley began to experiment with credit card painting, a style he now considers his signature. By applying paint directly to a credit card instead of a brush, this method gives way to interesting lines, shapes and textures. As a result, each of his pieces is so unique and individual. There is very little redundancy among his work. Wesley attributes much of the artistic growth that he has seen in himself over the years to the community of artists that he has found here in Grand Rapids. The feedback and support of fellow artists has helped him become a better artist, and encouraged him to continue to create without fear of making mistakes. He has discovered that the process of creating is just as much a work of art, as the final piece itself.
