The Infernal Device

Myke Amend's avatar Myke Amend

The Infernal Device is a mechanical time machine, a multimedia contraption set in motion by the powers of sun and wind, depicting the cyclical dance between societies and the environments that support them. Each panel of the rotating painting shows a technological discovery and the impact of this discovery on a world. The inhabitants of a familiar-looking planet harvest wood, develop industrial factories, cross oceans and skies in vessels that run on steam, invent technology to harness the atom, and pull fossil fuels from the beneath the soil. But certain types of technology are hard to maintain. An empire may collapse under the weight of its intensive demand for energy, forgetting the gentler methods it once used to live in greater harmony with nature. Fortunately, collapse is inevitably followed by rediscovery and re-growth, allowing the cycle to begin again, always with the hope that this time the lessons will have been learned.
