I have been carving for over 30 years and fishing all my life so it was a natural transition to begin carving fish. Trial and error has led me to the use of cedar for its' grain and knots which I attempt to preserve for uniqueness in each work. The greatest challenge is to use the wood to show motion in the subjects. Fishing has led me to beautiful places and lovely species. As I work it is easy to reflect on those locations and experiences on the water. I hope my work triggers a recall of special times for viewers. When I am not carving I find time to fish, bird hunt, tend grapevines and garden. My wife and I travel some but most enjoy our time with family here in West Michigan. Through art I have made donations advocating cold water fisheries, picked up a few dollars to support my vices, and made some great connections with interesting people. I hope Art Prize offers those same opportunities. Past work and more information can be found at the Grape Ridge Carvings website.
