As a native of rural Mid Michigan I grew up with a profound respect for, and interest in, nature, animals, automobiles and the fascinating people I was surrounded by. When I inherited a Canon Ftb with a 200 mm lens I was amazed at the dramatic images I was able to capture using that telephoto lens. It seemed to compress and intensify those closeup images. Over years of practice with that equipment a sense of composition came slowly but naturally. I discovered the richness of classic and collector car shows, mostly in the Detroit area. The amazing details of special cars captured my interest, including the variety of hood ornaments and badges reflecting the aesthetics of each automotive era . That long lens allowed me to capture beautiful images of these "mascots," as they are known, most with amazing stories behind them. Being drawn to details also guides my photos of blossoms and other details of nature, faces of people and animals along with patterns of architecture and other subjects. At Art Prize, I'm presenting a selection of hood ornament images that I produced for an exhibit at the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn called "Mascots of Motion."
