We serve 1,200+ children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Kent & Barry counties at no cost to athletes or their families. www.somi.org/area11 Local Special Olympics athletes worked together, under the guidance of staff and student artists from Kendall College of Art & Design, to create this work of art -- a mandala. It demonstrates that intellectuals with disabilities have many abilities. For some, it was their first time painting, and this experience inspired them to try new things and build confidence in themselves. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Athletes are given continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness and athletic skill, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
