Seungmo Park

Jersey City, NJ, United States

“Hwan” means “Maya” in Sanskrit. It is an illusion similar to the transmitted image from a projector. The true entity is revealed only when the projection is blocked, leaving the blank surface. Ultimately, everything seemingly existent is non-existential. One’s existential state cannot be approved without its essence present. However, reference by names in the absence of one’s entity is much like me referring to myself as Seungmo Park regardless of the presence of my self-consciousness at the moment. The nature of one only becomes visible at states when all fabricated egos are shed off. Reality is a state of objective existence completely independent from the subject of cognition. There are two spaces—one for the dead, and for the living, or for those dreaming, and for those awake. I question where we are among these spaces. As biting into an apple in a dream is indistinguishable from the reality, we are left to wish this moment as the reality. I study the moment where the split between the two occurs. “Yeongi” is a phenomenon where everything arises from its relations: therefore, there are no outcomes without reciprocal relations. The countless mutual relationships build to shape the ego called “I.” One’s ego, like a garment, is nothing but an extended thread when undone. An ego called a “name” is sown from one’s birth, functioning as a frame for it to grow upon. It soon starts expanding through one’s environment and relationships. The ego takes a shape completely oblivious of its ultimate form. Ego resembles one’s shadow on the ground. What truly exists will always stay hidden, while the falsity is exposed in plain sight. It never was, never is, and never will be. We were never born, we never died, and we never will.
