"Depth" is a continuation of a series in mixed media that I started last year for Art Prize2013. The 2014 piece is made with a foundation in Michigan (maps tracing old highways and landmarks), painted india ink birch, and dyed Michigan beeswax, (encaustic) create a luminous surface, that causes the viewer to pause and look deeper at the abstract landscape. The grove of birch trees painted in india ink recede beneath the layers of wax, creating an abstract view of a landscape. The bark of a birch is multi-layered and delicate covering the hidden strength of the tree, which may only be revealed with further observation. The artwork represents the layers of a person that are built up through time generated by our faith, our experiences, and our choices we make that form our personalities. At first glance "Depth" may appear only an abstract painting, but with closer investigation, much lies beneath the surface.
