Peter Van Ael is the Coordinator of the Jack Olson Gallery at Northern Illinois University. He received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his BFA from Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. His creative research is informed by an interest in pattern, camouflage, mimicry, layering, and relative scale. He finds inspiration both in the natural and human-made worlds, creating works of art that gradually reveal and obscure information in richly textured layers. Since 2000, he has focused his studio practice on the reduction woodcut, finding its sculptural physicality and working immediacy that requires the gradual destruction of the matrix during the creative process very appealing and seductive.
