Above the Influence-Kent County: Telling the Stories of Community Youth

Michele Stitt's avatar Michele Stitt

Every teen’s life is filled with pressure, some of it good, some of it bad. ATI-Kent County is not about telling teens what to do, it is about equipping and empowering young people to stand up to negative pressures and influences. This art piece represents a coalition of Kent County teen voices across geographic, ethnic, racial, cultural lines and experiences, all united by a common goal – a desire to live above negative influences and to inspire change that impacts the environments where youth live, work, play, and learn. ATI-Kent County (1) allows teens to clearly see and discover the positive influences and experiences around them; and (2) become independently aware of what influences are worth pursuing and which lead to a dead end. This influence literacy art piece was created to open opportunities for teen-to-teen and teen-to-adult community dialogue to create new norms and prevention-based solutions to reduce underage substance use.
