The Great Race

Michael Peoples's avatar Michael Peoples

Reactions from viewers to my work, has repeatedly indicated a correlation between the sense of smell and bright colors. While I anticipated viewers' attraction to the element of color, I was surprised they responded as strongly to the olfactory element. As it happens, the scent of crayons are one of the most recognizable smells (ranking number 18 of 20). It is this direct correlation with childhood that this work is meant to explore. The ducks are cast from oversized rubber ducklings--of the sort used as bath toys, or for carnival games. The scent and form prompt a nostalgic recollection of childhood, reinforced by the size of the individual elements, which recall the scale of these forms in relation to the hands of children. As proposed, the arrangement functions as a statement about the pace of adult life. The varied colors represent the spectrum of the human race, while the nearly identical forms emphasize the shared features of our early experience.
