I am a lifelong resident of West Michigan. I have a degree from Grand Valley State University, where I studied art and music. I am employed as the receptionist and deputy treasurer in Jamestown Charter Township. I am also an accompanist and give private piano lessons. I have had artwork exhibited in many west Michigan juried art shows. This year's art prize entry is a commentary on the divisions between people that are created when there is no desire or ability to relate to those who don't share our own culture, beliefs, economic status or even skin color. This polarization is exacerbated by the words we use in our homes and public places, and I often wonder how much of this behavior is innate and how much is learned behavior that is a product of our upbringing. In my life experience, as a child everything was black or white, good or evil, perfect or flawed. As I grow older, I find that every person contains all possibilities and it takes conscious effort to recognize when we are not expressing the best in ourselves and to look for the best in others. It is far easier to denigrate other persons, societies, cultures as opposed to looking for what we have in common as human beings.
