Raised in upstate New York farm country, Matthew Runfola was surrounded by humans interacting with the earth. As Matthew’s love for both mechanical objects and nature grew, his sense of the symbiotic association between humans and the world we live in began. Matthew graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a Mechanical Engineering degree, minoring in Environmental Studies. Looking for even more creative freedom combining technical and visual, Matthew established Runfola Studios in 2003 with the intent of designing and developing functional and sculptural art that explores the relationship between natural and human-made elements. Matthew also currently teaches, and heads the Metal Sculpture Department, at the Evanston Art Center, located in Evanston, IL.
