Mary-Louise Totton has earned a BFA (painting and sculpture), a MA (Southeast Asian studies), and a Ph.D (art history). Her paintings have been exhibited internationally and reside in private collections in California, Michigan, Florida, New Jersey, Indonesia, and Singapore. Associate Professor in the Gwen Frostic School of Arts, Western Michigan University, Totton is also a freelance curator of historical textile and contemporary Indonesian art exhibits. Drawing inspiration for her art making from the many cultures of the Asia Pacific region, her process of color experimentation, patterning, and mark-making are akin to many traditional textile and body-adornment techniques. Her sculptural practice explores the adaptability of textiles and ornaments to create tangible mementos of the past and commentary on contemporary life. mary-louisetotton.com
