Mary Sayre's love of painting began when she was 10 years old when she painted her first oil painting. She studied Illustration at Kendall College of art and Design in Grand Rapids MI and her love of the ocean called her away. Mary began painting the Ocean from her new home on the island of Port Aransas, Texas. Painting her travels and diving experiences documented her combined passion for art, travel, boating, scuba diving and snorkeling. Mary worked as a deck-hand and mate: on a crew boat in the oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico, on a fishing charter vessel, and crewed on a Bertram International Sport Fishing Yacht. Her dream of owning a schooner began on 1981, and was fulfilled in 2002. Mary now co-owns the Schooner Wind Dancer which ports in Grand Haven, MI. Wind Dancer provides exciting opportunities for guest to feel the wind in their face, hear the song of the sea, and experience the tradition of sailing on a gaff-rigged vessel on the magical waters of Lake Michigan. Mary has a passion for scuba diving and painting the beautiful world found above and beneath the waves. Her current mediums include oils on canvas and acrylics on marble. The natural veining and colors of the marble creates depth not found on a blank canvas. This innovative, original art form adds depth to the underwater background and Mary enjoys "painting INTO the marble" and creating her paintings. Her work is collected locally and internationally. Mary became a certified SSI Dive Master, and dives in a list of amazing locations, including: Trinidad-Tobago, Bonaire, Mexico, Belize, Florida, Bahamas, Texas and Michigan. Boating and diving continue to inspire Mary's work. She adventurously welcomes any opportunities to dive, boat or be near the water and revisits cherished memories by painting from her memories and photos. A master scuba diver and sailor, Mary has seen the changes in our reefs and waters. Conserving and protecting our marine environment is vital to Mary. As an ocean advocate and proud member of the Ocean Artist Society, Mary hopes to spot-light awareness on preserving our water planet by sharing the beautiful marine images in her paintings. The vastness of the water, witnessed from boating ON the water, and the minute, intricate details of life UNDER water all amaze Mary, and furthers her commitment to preserving the magic of it all.
