My answer to the question commonly put to artists*, "why do you do what do?" is "why not". That may seem evasive on the surface, but we need to ask why most people do not make anything. The urge to create is natural and has unfortunately been stripped away from most of us, so asking "why" is a misguided inquiry. The act of creating should not be a mysterious and misunderstood rarity. On the other hand, that is perhaps the real reason they ask. Within my work, I seek to "objectify" photography by combining it with other media such as fiber and mosaics, to slow it down in this age of rampant photo production, when perhaps even the simple act of spending time with a single image is radical. I am a graduate of the University of Michigan and Cranbrook Academy of Art, living and working in the northwest lower peninsula after many years in Chicago. . . . . . .*. . . . . PS: I believe the title or label "artist" is, I believe, earned and conferred by, others ... not the self.
