A BFA graduate of Washington University, St. Louis, MO, I have fifty years of professional artistic practice: twelve years as a graphic designer, 20 years as a ceramic sculptor, 19 years as a painter. My husband and I built Hummingbird Studios, an art workshop center, home, and gallery on a sustainable, adobe straw-bale compound. I shifted from being a full-time painter to being an artist-activist and non-profit director when I created The Soul Box Project after the Las Vegas shooting in 2017. I now spend my time designing displays, speaking at events, schooling myself in gun-sense activism, researching non-profit development, designing & writing online material, making Boxes & designing panels with volunteers, and cultivating a social media presence for The Project. Since those first 20 days when I created the concept, website and structure of this community art ("artivism") project, the pace has not subsided. The Fetzer Institute was an early supporter of the Project. People from 37 states have participated by sending in Boxes. As of the end of April, we have collected 170,000 of the 200,000-Box goal toward our exhibit in Washington, D.C., October 16-17, 2021. One ArtPrize venue has the unique opportunity to exhibit a selection of the collection as it traverses the continent from Oregon to D.C.
