The Meaning Behind 1

Katherine Downie's avatar Katherine Downie

My current series titled "The Meaning Behind" is based on vintage signs displayed in the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit. These signs, originally used as advertisements for various companies, restaurants, and products, took on new meaning when they were put on display in the museum. Their original purpose was removed, and their new purpose was not to draw attention to a product, but to a time period. In using these signs in my work, I am removing them another step from their original purpose. They no longer advertise, nor are they meant as a throwback to an earlier, bygone era; their new purpose is to function as art. I have remotivated the signs, making them a motif or a catalyst for my paintings. They no longer function in their original purpose, they are now merely textures, colors, and lines – they are parts of a new whole.
