My name is Karl Michael Gerzan. I have been a professional artist since 1996. I primarily work in oil on canvas and on a commission basis. The compositions I am submitting to you are representative of the commissioned paintings I have been creating over the past five years. Over the course of nearly two decades in the studio I’ve developed my easily recognized painting style, “Geometric Expressionism”. This style became a vehicle for me to convey my theories regarding color. By segregating my colors into their defined areas, I have been able to create color contrasts with ease, as intended. My compositions rely heavily upon two classic artistic elements, color and shape. But it is the third element that I incorporate that I credit most of my success to, contextualism. By referencing existing elements, weather it be wall color or the natural environment or the proposed building usage, I am able to compose my paintings in a manner that is both symbiotic and balanced. My goal as an artist and a craftsman is not to simply create a beautiful painting. My goal is to contribute to creating a harmonious space in a collaborative effort between architect, interior designer, client and myself. At present, I am reestablishing myself in The United States after an extended sabbatical in Mexico where I have been living and working for the past seven years.
