Karen Dixon is a Grand Rapids native, growing up in East Grand Rapids, and spending the last 24 years raising a family, teaching, and being an active member of her community. After receiving a Bachelors Degree from Western Michigan University, she earned her Masters Degree in Special Education at Johns Hopkins University. She is certified in Special Education, General Education and Art Education. Her creativity and passion as a teacher resulted in being named Teacher of the Year for the state of Maryland. Over the years Karen has channeled her creativity into her kids’ pursuits; coaching a World Champion Odyssey of the Mind team, cheering on her son at swim meets and nurturing her eldest daughter’s artistic talents. Like so many people, life was turned upside down by the pandemic and Karen found herself at home with time. Time for herself, time to reflect and time to nurture the artist within. Windows of Opportunity came to life after months of exploring different types of art, finding her passion in mixed media collage art. She found herself drawn to handmade paper, manipulating it to create texture and dimension. Her unique style of “painting with paper” allowed her to bring her art to life.
