Karen Albanese Campbell is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist with a present focus on painting and printmaking. Her work is preoccupied with issues related to displaced people, homelessness and how human beings interact with the natural world as they look for shelter, comfort and home. In all her work, Albanese Campbell is searching for multi-layered ways of expressing her ideas. She is currently creating a procession of displaced people, “The Travelers,” that are nearly life-sized figures painted on loose canvas cloaked in the colors and patterns of the sky. In her printmaking, she works in relief, drypoint, collagraph and monotype as her primary techniques. Much of her current printmaking has been centered on displaced people sleeping outside or moving through the landscape on foot, fractured urban imagery, abstract skies and mountains. Karen works in a flexible way as a printmaker, painter and textile artist, often combining several techniques in one piece. For example, “The Travelers” series of paintings are irregularly shaped canvases finished with machine stitched mylar binding. Albanese Campbell has been exhibiting in group shows around Ohio and the country and is especially interested in showing her work in public venues where a great diversity of people will pass through and interact with her work. Albanese Campbell is inspired by observing people while traveling, museums of all kinds, Asian textiles, and watching the sky. In her spare time, she volunteers with an international center that assists new immigrants as they adjust to life in America. Karen is a core member of Phoenix Rising Printmaking Cooperative in Columbus, a member of ROY G BIV art gallery, Ohio Art League and Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA). She was born and raised in Syracuse, New York, attended Boston University on a full scholarship where she studied painting and printmaking to earn her BFA and has now lived in Ohio for over 30 years.
