Queen of the Reef

josh guge's avatar josh guge

I created this piece as a challenge to myself in the size and composition. Many of the fish and coral I have never created before so I was constantly being challenged and pushed as an artist to create the look I was envisioning in my head. I wanted to make it look like someone had just pulled this out of the ocean. I centered the entire base of my sculpture around a boat anchor covered in coral. Making the viewer ask questions and begin to wonder what was going on in the piece. The main focal point of the piece is the Queen Trigger Fish. She rules the coral. All the other fish are hiding from her as she is about to attack, with her mouth open, her next meal. The question is whether she will attack the shrimp or if the coral trout will protect the shrimp? The coral colors were chosen to tie together the colors of the fish. Your eye just naturally wants to look in the holes of the coral and at all angels to see if you have missed something.
