Maybe the Sky is Falling

Joseph Kurnik's avatar Joseph Kurnik

Much as leaves and dust, whisked aloft, give shape to invisible currents of air, so the words that are formed and swirl through societies' collective conversation can show “which way the wind blows.” Strange sounding words become commonplace. Ridiculous or respectful, silly or sinister, euphemism or incendiary firebomb; whether newly minted or recently redefined, the repetition of these words and phrases build into clouds that can swirl by unnoticed or loom with dark menace. It all depends on which way the wind blows.
