I have invented a modular ceramic building system using as its basis the form of X. The X forms communicate with the building systems in surrounding architecture even though it is not architecture but rather clay sculpture. I selected the X for its essential structural strength and for a symbolic power that transcends time and geography. The modules create a continuum of interlocking pattern, which includes projections in four cardinal directions, four directions that metaphorically parallel Jung’s four functions and are symbolic of the human need for psychic orientation. “The four functions of consciousness described by Dr. Jung as thought, feeling, intuition, and sensation equip man to deal with the impressions of the world he receives from within and without.” With this work I am also attempting to deconstruct the dehumanization inherent of modern modular designs.. By dehumanization, I mean the absence of the hand made, of the personal, in a culture that fosters mechanization.
