My hometown is Paris, Michigan. I attended Reed City High School. These places are about 70 Miles north of Grand Rapids. For college, I studied painting and Advertising Design at Ferris State in Big Rapids. Later, I took courses at Aquinas College and earned a degree in Philosophy. For a good part of my adult life, I lived overseas as a language teacher, so I would not be surprised if there is some Japanese influence in my art. I enjoyed studying painting and learning classic methods; however, my interest has always been with the modernists: Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso. I find especially joyful the major works of Matisse--I am endlessly fascinated by their playful beauty. These painters too, especially Picasso, learned classic methods, and then unlearned them; they freed themselves to draw and color again like a child with a box of crayons.
