Beacon provides an academic and therapeutic milieu that is designed to support students struggling with emotional issues and trauma. Casting Compassion began as an art intervention to explore the values of our school by displaying the compassion we strive to show in our day-to-day lives. This piece is meant to evoke a mutual understanding of the experiences that make us human. As an educator and art therapist, I have worked with students with disabilities for 33 years. All my years of teaching have been at Beacon Day Treatment. This year, I received the honor of being chosen as a 2017 DTE Educator of the Year. This award recognizes teachers doing extraordinary work in the field of arts education though University Musical Society in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I strive to provide my students with experiences that broaden their capacity to be human; to communicate, collaborate, think critically, and problem solve through the arts.
