The picture under 'Art Prize Entries' represents the exhibit (Connected: Art From A Spiritual Perspective, Harris bldg, 3rd floor) that I'm fortunate to be included in. My piece is an oil pastel, and like all the pieces in the show, it's the result of a unique project that paired 30 visual artists with 30 storytellers, who had never met before. Each pair was given a word, in my case 'dignity', and asked to share how that word relates to their lives. The artist then created a piece based on that word and the storytellers' story. This was, without a doubt, the most challenging piece I have ever done. Not only do I work more than full time (I own 16 Hands gallery in Ann Arbor, MI), but it took me so far out of my creative comfort zone that I really thought I couldn't do it, and certainly not something that would be Art Prize worthy. It was only out of a desire to honor the storyteller and my commitment to the project that I pushed through it, and I'm so glad I did.
