As an artist, author and illustrator for over 50 years my art covers many genre. My work includes realistic portraits, abstracts, cartoons, clay, photography and more. I am honored to have my work displayed in the Ronald Reagan Library; The White House; Yahaba, Japan mayoral office; 47' public art outdoor mural in Fremont, MI; Spectrum Health - Tamarac Wellness Center in Fremont, MI; and countless private collections. My entry this year is titled "Walk a Mile in My Shoes...Be Kind". This project is both my artistic vision and an interactive, community-wide multimedia work that attempts to raise awareness about bullying, by inviting our collaborators and those who experience it to engage in empathy and kindness. If the purpose of art is, among other things, to provoke emotions and invoke wonder while communicating a certain set of ideas, then “Be Kind” is a presentation intended to speak to viewers’ hearts and minds. My collaborators and I, who include students across Newaygo County, ultimately invite the viewer to put themselves in the shoes of children who have suffered bullying, through visual, audio and narrative media. While it won’t end bullying, “Be Kind” can affirm our common commitment to be more empathetic of the challenges many young people face. We hope it can do its small part to raise awareness about the importance of simply being kind to each other. My work for ArtPrize includes six 4'x8' canvases and six 5' tall free- standing displays of decorated shoes, all emphasizing our theme "Walk a Mile in My Shoes....Be Kind".
