My name is Jeff Riopelle and I was born in Detroit, Michigan, sometime in the mid-last century. I was raised near Detroit in a family of professional artists. Until now, I have gone a different route. I graduated with two degrees in literature from the University of Michigan and with an MBA from Columbia University in New York City. I lived 11 years in New York, and, then, moved to Europe with my work for the next 25 years - living in Frankfurt, London and Zurich. I returned to Michigan last year, after a couple of tidal waves hit my life, including battling and - happily - surviving leukemia. My return to Michigan sounds like I have come “full circle,” but that has a disagreeable ring of finality to it. I am at the beginning of an exciting new life phase! Painting is not something that I just picked up. I have been painting my whole life. At the University of Michigan, I attended classes in the art school. In New York, I went every weekend to the famous Art Students League, doing mainly charcoal drawings and pastel paintings. I also drew and painted frequently at the private studios of my friends, including the - at the time - well-known “Joe’s Basement” in Soho. One summer, I took a private course from the Master Pastelist, Daniel Greene. I live now near Cadillac, Michigan, where I have a large studio space. Furthermore, I have two young adult children and a dog.
