I am a retired Physician living in the Upper Peninsula, who developed wood turning as a hobby after being exposed to the craft by my father. I have been actively turning for the last 11 years. I have attended several week long programs of wood turning instruction, but most of my learning has been through the Hands On approach. I am struck by the natural beauty of wood, especially when it is combined with a pleasing form. I also use color and texture on the great majority of my pieces. I use alcohol based wood dyes which work with the wood and amplify the grain patterns instead of covering them up as paints so often do. I use primarily local woods which are plentiful in the Upper Peninsula. I usually use a high gloss finish for my colored pieces which gives them depth and makes the colors more vibrant. The use of color causes many to think I work in glass or ceramics, leading me to employ an "It's really Wood" sign in galleries and at shows. I started showing my work in 2013 when I retired after practicing medicine for 34 years. I have been very fortunate to win Best of Show in 3 D art at the Art On the Rocks show in Marquette 2014 and 2015 and Best in Wood in 2016 and 2017. I have also been a vendor at the prestigious American Craft Council show in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2015 -2018. My work has won other awards in shows and on the internet wood turning forums. It is on display in several galleries in both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. I am a member of the American Association of Woodturners and our local AAW chapter, Superiorland Woodturners, where I serve as program director. Someone once asked me if woodturning was what I did for relaxation. My reply was "No, Woodturning is what I do for Excitement!"
