Drawing on her career as a neuroscientist, E. Ingrid Tietz began exploring alternate experimental ways of expressing visual imagery. Her work revolves around contemporary, representational and non-representational forms. The evolving artistic image derives from her intrinsic responses to life and death, responses to social issues, as well as the natural world. This range of internalized emotions is expressed and continuously revised using a variety of tools and media to that includes slip-cast porcelain as a principal sculptural element, as well as abstract oil and cold wax paintings. Her current work focuses on integrating these approaches. E. Ingrid Tietz came to Detroit in 1978 to obtain a PhD, followed by a ~30-yr academic neuroscience research career. She lived in downtown Detroit from 1978-1994, and in Ann Arbor since 2011. She has trained with regional and national professional artists in diverse media, including ceramics, and most recently oil and cold wax.
