Charlie Farwell became my next door neighbor and self declared Neighborhood Watch after many years as a drifter. His colorful character needed a painting to honor it after his passing on April 19, 2008. A decorated veteran of the Korean War, Charlie found items in  dumpsters to resell, or broke them apart, and reassembled them into various forms. From his perch in the camp chair on the front porch, Charlie greeted passersby with a hearty “Hello”, “Work!”, or “Get a job!”. He was Handsome Chuck to the ladies.     The trademark bib overalls and red buffalo plaid overshirt were just the first layer to his personality. His big toothless grin allowed me past the gruff exterior to a caring, generous man who deeply loved God, country, family, and friends.  Some saw an eccentric old man with a cart, while those close to him saw a man with purpose, dignity, and reason for being.
