Ode To Lily

Douglas Gruizenga's avatar Douglas Gruizenga

Earlier this year I attended a funeral for a special woman, named Lily,in Grand Rapids. Lily was born in in China during the early years of communism. Lily's parents were sent to a labor camp. And, Lily became involved in the red guard. Amazingly, Lily was able to find her way to The United States. Here she obtained a university education, and became a respected representative for Amway in Asia. Lily became a citizen of The United States Of America, adopted a daughter from China, and married shortly before being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Lily enjoyed art,and embodied a loving, creative, and dedicated outlook on life. Her faith in Jesus brought her peace. I was especially touched by the personal stories of people who had the priviledge to know Lily. While I was not one of those people, Lily is a person that has given me the motivation to create this sculpture. Lily's spirit lives on in the memories of the people who loved and respected her.
