I am a sculptor based in New York City whose work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe, China and Japan since 1985. Throughout my career I have received grants, awards and residencies as, Edward Albee Foundation to Santa Fe Art Institute and Gropiusstadt in Berlin. I've had numerous solo projects including LMAK Gallery, NY, Heskin Contemporary, NY; Galerie Junger, Shanghai, China; Indiana University Institute of Art and Design and the foyer of a Philip Johnson building in Berlin, Germany to name a few. Throughout my career, I have sought to challenge formal and conceptual oppositions, including interiority versus exteriority and autonomous objects versus site-specific installation, working in public spaces as well as within more traditional gallery contexts. My work employs non-traditional materials, including corrugated cardboard, inflated plastic, nylon, lenticular plastic, and Plexiglas, and I often collaborate with industrial fabricators to produce works of ambitious scale. Although the work visually references kitsch, vernacular architecture and utilitarian objects, it is also elegant and minimal, reflecting attention back to the space surrounding it. My intention is to illuminate relationships between the individual subject, the built environment, and the public and private domains in which individuals and communities operate. My interest in inflatable sculpture has endured because of the inflatables’ ability to call attention to unique features of a site, reflecting attention back onto the surrounding space. All bodies of work use light and transparent color as a means of altering and activating the surrounding space. I am currently developing sculptures that continue to circumvent barriers of spatial articulation.
