"Contained Adjustments" was sown in 2000 when Donna developed a Healing Arts program for County Jail Inmates. Approximately 60 gifted individuals participated from Isabella, Roscommon, and Ogemaw Counties from 2000-2003. The title "The Cicadian Years" represents the 13 year postponement in creating this installation due to health, and the adoption of twins. It also denotes that even in “dormancy”, there still exists the ability for transformation. Although incarceration is a necessary tool with-in Society, this Installation's intent is to provoke questions about our current Prison Industrial Complex, Prisons-for-Profit, our Criminal Justice System, and hopefully, question what kind of Society we want to live in. If we believe to err is human, believe life is a journey, and truly believe in equality, then we need to stop handing out life sentences for even the smallest of infractions and restore the "person" via rehabilitation and education. Currently, we incarcerate and release with a lifetime of attached stigma, which affects the ability to secure housing and employment, effectively limiting the ability to become a contributing member of Society. Not everyone begins on an equal playing field. We need to adjust our focus towards the individual, and how the individual effects our communities, and ultimately, ourselves. Due to space considerations, the Installation will be shown in an alternate format. Donna holds two Master Degrees- History (w/dual Art History concentration); and Art: Mixed-Medium Installation/Sculpture.
