I am a collage artist and writer. A former editor and college English teacher, my interests in music, philosophy, literature, art, and nature are evident in my works. In January 2011 I exhibited a collection of altered books and collaged mandalas in a solo show, "The Gracious Circle," in the Side Gallery of the Jung Society of Houston, Texas. My work has been exhibited in galleries in Louisiana, Alabama, Virginia, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. I have received awards in recognition of my work from the Bar Harbor Fine Arts Festival (Maine); the Friends of Modern Art of the Flint Institute of Art (Michigan); the South Fourth Street Association of the St. James Art Show in Louisville, Kentucky; the Crosby Festival of the Arts in Toledo, Ohio; the Paint Creek Center for the Arts in Rochester, Michigan; and the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge, Louisiana, among others. In 2015 I exhibited my work at art shows in New Jersey, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York, and Virginia. I live with my husband, Steve O'Keefe, in Staunton, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. ---I create finely detailed mosaic collages in abstract and symbolic patterns using a variety of papers (mostly recycled) hand cut into tiny pieces. Using a sharp metal stylus lightly touched against spread glue, I pick up a tiny piece of paper and position it on the collage substrate. I use Elmer's Glue-All and PVA to affix paper to substrate, and E--6000 (a thick, clear, strong bonding craft glue) to affix occasional metal, glass, or wood pieces I may choose to include in the collage. I work with a variety of substrate, including discarded books, salvaged or new wood, metal, and stretched canvas. When the collage is complete I finish it with multiple coats of polyurethane varnish (Minwax Fast Drying). This coalesces and deepens the colors and protects the collage. Sometimes I draw guidelines for the collage, but usually I collage a center or focal point(s) and follow a process of dialogue with the artwork to allow it to develop organically. --Deborah O'Keeffe
