“Colors of the Grand Canyon” by Daren Redman Installation hosted by Peaches Bed and Breakfast in Grand Rapids, Michigan during ArtPrize Eight 2016. “Colors of the Grand Canyon” by Daren Redman is a 3D textile art installation made with silk fabric using a low water emersion dyeing technique. Water conservation was Daren’s environmental issue while at the Grand Canyon National Park as the North Rim Artist-in-Resident, fall 2015. “Colors” originated from a series first created at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The work reveals and proves that America’s nature is fragile. ArtPrize viewers are invited to explore and reflect about the magnificence of the Grand Canyon where Daren experienced her three-day hike in solitude and silence. For 24 miles, Daren trekked from the north to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Once back up on the rim at her artist cabin she created her textiles to mimic the colors of the inner canyon's geology that spans from 250 million years to 1.4 billion years old. As a response to being outdoors in the canyon for 3 days and then outside for the next 3 weeks at the cabin, Daren’s installation captures the awe inspiring vastness of the Grand Canyon's outdoors with all of the elements of the heat Daren experienced while making the inspiring journey. Daren’s accomplishment of making the journey to the bottom of the canyon, something which very few hikers achieve, is inspiring. It is Daren’s hope that viewers of her installation will appreciate the beauty and harsh realities of nature and all of the Grand Canyon's colors. When choosing the values for her dye recipes, she chooses shades of trees, leaves, rocks and flowers. Daren’s dyeing techniques are completed entirely by hand. She photographs when she travels with her husband in Europe and across the United States and then uses those enlarged photos as inspiration when designing her artwork.
