Consuelo (Cony) Poland, a graduate of Kendall College of Art & Design, is from Traverse City, MI but has strong and ancient roots in Guatemala’s Mayan culture. At the age of 3, she was adopted by American parents and moved from a rural Indian village to a urban Cincinnati neighborhood and then 2 years later to Traverse City. Before she began speaking English, she began building large villages reminiscent of the Mayan ruins with her Lego toys. Cony was able to reunite with her birth family on a trip to Guatemala when she was 16. On this trip, to one of the most isolated and primitive places in Guatemala, Cony discovered who she looked like and formed a deep personal sense of identity and the basis of her artwork. One day she hopes to return to Guatemala and create her art among the ancient Mayan ruins. Cony’s artwork reflects her background and her life. It is an urban shelter that lets nature’s elements in. The angular lines and color evoke Cony’s Guatemalan roots.
