Charles Smalligan was born in Muskegon Michigan in 1945. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1963 and received his B.A. degree from Calvin College and his M.A. degree from Western Michigan University. He taught in the sciences for the Grand Rapids Public Schools for 32.5 years and he retired in 2000. Since that time he has pursued his avocation for wood sculpture, taught carving classes, and taught English to PhD candidates in Peking University (Beijing, China) for five semesters. Charles is a self-taught artist who began sculpting in wood after a trip to Europe in 1976. He has won numerous first place awards in both wood carving and art competitions in the United States and Canada. These included several firsts in an International competition in Windsor, Canada, the Best-of Show award at the "Artistry in Wood" competition in Dayton, Ohio and first place in sculpture at the Harness Tracks of America Art competition. His pieces can be found in many private collections.
