As a multi-media, multi-dimensional conceptual artist I work in any medium that best suits my message. If I find a venue this will be my 3rd year participating in ArtPrize. In 2010 I brought my Venus of Willendorf Project ( a criticism of the 67 Billion Dollar Diet Industry to Schuler Books and Music in Downtown Grand Rapids and in 2011 I had an installation called "Does This Make My 'Blank' Look Big" poking fun at toxic masculinity by creating a giant proud wall of dishes featuring men and their fishing trophies at the Women's City Club. For the most part my work is political as the old feminist axiom says. "The Personal is Political" Last year I along with 400 plus artists boycotted ArtPrize, we all had our different reasons; for some it was about the treatment of the artists and for others it was a response to Trump and his choice of Betsy DeVos as the Secretary of Education. Alas our efforts went unnoticed, and no one cared in the end, we accomplished nothing. This year as the months went on...I really wanted to enter again, it's fun, not for the reason we are told...but it's just fun. I had several great ideas that have been percolating, but with the resent gun violence in Florida and Mrs. DeVos lack luster visit to the school for a press conference. I just lost it. I don't want this to be an attack on the poor woman, but something really needs to be done and it's obvious that this administration is not equipped. And merely 2 months later no one is talking about it again. I just can't sit back, I'm taking my cheeky sense of humor and sense of the outlandish up to Grand Rapids ( venue or not ) to make sure how I feel gets hammered home. I do not believe there should be guns in schools. Grizzly Bears or not...that is why there is bear spray and fencing. Most of the bear attacks over the years have occurred in National Parks, and with Trump in office we won't have any more National Parks to worry about either. So I hope to entertain the kids pose for pictures, attract people to register to vote in the midterm elections, and open up a dialogue about hard targets and kids. I hope someone will host my performance. I think it's important and current and the time and location could not be better.
