If You Build it They Will Come

Many pieces have their beginnings from the actual dialogue that happens within the creative mind of an artist. My vision was to create a piece that had no end goal in mind, but rather the actual dialogue that happened within my mind. In my piece, “If you build it, they will come”, the series of conversations that allowed me to arrive at the end result became important. How an artist comes up with a title or decides what object or materials to use to create a piece are unique to the creative thought dialogue. What then becomes more important is what the piece itself does. In this case it challenges the viewer to reflect on more than a pure aesthetic. There is the dynamic of a giant mousetrap that causes the viewer to now take the role of the mouse. Are we the infestation? Are we forced to deal with the anxiety caused by the space? Is the enticing treat to be placed on the trap in our own mind and soul? Can we just ignore the potential danger? The challenge is there to be discovered.
