Artist Statement: I want to peel away the false layers one builds up over time to shield themselves from the world and show how similar we all are to one another. Artist Biography: My childhood was different from a lot of my friends. The main reason for this was because of the heavy art influence in my life. My mother was a schoolteacher and my father was one of the lead interior designers in Michigan. So day after day I lived with oil paintings, antique furniture, and African art, as well as over 2500 books that span fine art, furniture, design and so on. At night I would look through those books captivated by the color and the stories being told through the paintings. This was a critical part of my development as a painter. This is how I critique my own work today. Living all those years with that art at my fingertips, I know what level my work needs to be in order to be successful. I grew up on the border of Detroit just north of 8 mile; not only diverse in culture but also religion. My father's collection of African art and various literatures on the multitudes of different cultures help me experiment with color and textures in my paintings. I've always been interested in capturing the "Real Life". The struggle and pain we all experience is always present in my work. Fantasy and fortune are myths, but everyone holds something inside themselves that makes us human. That is what I'm interested in discovering. I want to peel away the false layers one builds up over time to shield themselves from the world and show how similar we all are to one another.
