Head Start for Kent County is coordinating with over 1,400 families, students, and educators to explore and learn together during ArtPrize Education Days. I recently sat down with Kari Clark, Education Manager of Head Start for Kent County, to learn more about this exciting new program as well as their new arts-focused curriculum enhancement that launches this school year.

Becca Guyette (BG): What is Head Start for Kent County?

Kari Clark (KC): Head Start for Kent County provides comprehensive services to children birth to 5 at no cost to the family. As a program, we believe family engagement plays a critical role in the success of the child. Head Start for Kent County is dedicated to providing high quality services to children and families through home visiting for the birth to 3 year olds and preschool for 3 to 5 years olds.

BG: What programs are planned for Head Start families during ArtPrize Seven?

KC: Head Start for Kent County has been able to take part in ArtPrize in the past by sending a couple classrooms to Education Days programs. After brainstorming with our Education Task Force committee, we wanted a way to involve more children and families in this valuable experience. We are so excited about how our collaboration with ArtPrize has expanded this year to honor a day where all 69 Head Start classrooms can explore ArtPrize on a tour with their teacher and teacher assistant.

BG: Head Start is implementing STEAM curriculum this year. What is STEAM, and how does the partnership with ArtPrize tie into this exciting new initiative?

KC: STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. This year, all of our classrooms will be incorporating specific STEAM activities to expand children’s learning, including art-based activities and creative experiences.

BG: What is the most exciting part of this partnership for you and Head Start for Kent County?

KC: The most exciting part of the collaboration with ArtPrize is engaging families and connecting them to this enriching community event.
