Any space within the ArtPrize district — no matter the size, public and private, indoors and outdoors — can sign up to host artists and visitors from around the world.

GRAND RAPIDS (Michigan) FEBRUARY 27, 2020 — Venue registration for the 2020 ArtPrize competition opens next week. From March 2 to April 2, any space within the event district can sign up to host hundreds of artists and half a million visitors from around the world. Nearly 200 venues answer the call for each event — big and small, public and private, indoors and outdoors. During the registration period, venues will have the opportunity to apply for $90,000 in total grants — to support their exhibitions and the work that will be on display in their spaces. ArtPrize venue registration will open Monday on artprize.org, and is the first step in building this fall’s exhibition, slated to return to Grand Rapids, Michigan from September 16 to October 4.

“It’s now easier than ever before to register your space as an ArtPrize venue,” said Kevin Buist, ArtPrize Artistic Director. “We worked with the team at Open Systems Technologies to refresh the online registration process. Gather a few photos of your space, and in minutes your venue will be set up and ready to find artists later this spring.”

Venues are essential to the success of each event. ArtPrize is remarkably open and collaborative by design. Each individual venue that signs up works directly with artists, organizing its own show. Collectively, these nearly 200 independently-organized art shows make up the ArtPrize exhibition. Museums, parks, universities, retail shops, office spaces, restaurants, cafes, nonprofits, churches, residences and truly any other building or space can join in the energy and excitement of ArtPrize.

Venue Grants will return this year, with $40,000 total in available grant funding to be divided among several venues. All registered ArtPrize venues are invited to submit applications for a grant to assist in the production of their 2020 exhibition. Awards will be decided based on need and merit.

New in 2020 are Venue-Directed Artist Grants, generously supported by the Frey Foundation. This $50,000 fund consists of a series of 25 grants of $2,000 each that will be given from ArtPrize directly to artists. Venues can apply to have access to up to five of these grants, which they can direct to artists in order to recruit and support ambitious artworks for their venue. The purpose of Venue-Directed Artist Grants is to allow venues to initiate collaborations with artists who would otherwise be unable to participate in ArtPrize. Venues may apply for either or both of these grant opportunities online at artprize.org during the venue registration period.

The ArtPrize district spans three-square miles of downtown Grand Rapids. Any space within this boundary can be an ArtPrize venue.

ArtPrize will return from September 16 to October 4, 2020. Artist registration will be open from April 13-June 4 online at artprize.org.

The ArtPrize organization produces citywide contemporary art experiences that encourage critical discourse, celebrate artists, transform urban space and promote cultural understanding.

The ArtPrize competition, which takes place every other fall in Grand Rapids, MI, is open to any artist and decided by public vote. It invites artists to try out new ideas for an enormous audience. Registered artists and venues connect online at artprize.org and agree to present the artwork for public display during the 19-day event. The public votes using mobile devices and the web to distribute $250,000 in cash prizes. In 2018, the tenth installment of ArtPrize included over 1,260 entries representing 40 countries and 41 U.S. states and territories. ArtPrize annually attracts more than half a million active participants. Since its inception, individuals of all backgrounds have cast more than 3.4 million votes for public art.

ArtPrize is made possible in part through the generous support of many organizations. Please visit artprize.org for a full list of corporate and foundation partners.
