Artist, hair dresser, and consultant Bethany Grenier has been making art in in a variety of mediums for over 30 years. Her art has been featured in both group and solo exhibitions. Bethany's art continues to evolve, exploring the human experience with a focus on archetypal imagery and women’s issues, with overarching themes of catharsis and healing. •|• Artist’s Statement •|• I work with the imagery of archetypes (symbols). For 33 years, I’ve explored everything from pyramids and sacred geometry to Christian religious symbols, but there has been no single iconic image more important to me than the heart, with all of the complexities associated with it. For me, the heart is the perfect metaphor to express the experience of life. When I began working with this iconic image, I didn’t realize that I was beginning a journey into art as catharsis, or how important it would become to me. I have often combined heart imagery with my own exploration of women’s issues. I’ve also worked extensively with skulls, frequently combining them with hearts. If hearts are the perfect metaphor for life, then skulls are the obvious symbol of death. Working with the taboo image of skulls, I’ve come to realize they are as much a part of life as they are representative of death. Making skulls into objects of beauty and ancestor honoring has truly connected life and death for me, becoming a catalyst to fully living and expressing that fullness of life in my art.
