As a WOMAN warrior, I returned from war with invisible wounds. I suffered from PTSD, depression, and suicide ideation, following my tour in Iraq. After serving in the U.S. Army as a military police sergeant, I started noticing emotional cracks in my foundation. But I thought, I’d be damned if I served overseas and came back broken. I started working full throttle, with a fulltime job as a legal assistant, and attending the police academy—to mask the pain. However, I constantly felt jumpy and easily startled. Smells and noises transported me back to Iraq. After sacrificing everything—including my family—I wound up in the hospital for the treatment and care that I desperately needed; my life had finally imploded. This marked the first step on my beYOUtiful journey towards recovery. The hospital was the best place for me, considering how close I had come to suicide. To continue my journey toward wholeness, I created this healing art piece for ArtPrize.
