Elephants Never Forget

Anne Murra's avatar Anne Murra

We are all shaped and molded by words. I do. You did it. I'm sorry. I love you. It's cancer. It's a boy. You're beautiful. You're wrong. It's too late. I'm home. The words of our experiences have built us up and torn us down. Words deliver both the most mundane and the most powerful messages. Within each of us, there is a lifetime of words that have propelled us to our greatest victories, eased our pain, carried promises of hope, invoked deep despair, and made us laugh until we cried. These words are the memories that have shaped our lives. This is a series of three drawings that depict an elephant using only words to create its form. The words are a recording of what I (and the elephants) heard while sitting near the elephant enclosure at the Columbus Zoo. Their powerful stature formed only with words illustrates how words are integral in forming our ideas and our selves. Words influence lives. So choose your words wisely, because like elephants, we never forget.
