We are a Anglo-French artist couple collectively known as Hipkiss. Working together since 1983, over the years we have become specialists in drawing, which is almost our sole medium. Our work is the result of a genuine symbiosis: no part of the creative process is the product of one of us alone. Our daily lives and experiences are melded in an on-going dialogue; not only do we develop the techniques together, but every work has multiple possibilities in the course of its creation due to the interplay between us. We live and work on a wetland nature reserve in southwest France, whose features inspire much of our work, but a fascination with the socio-political aspects of populous environments remains, and we are drawn to explore the hinterlands between the urban and the bucolic. We met within the animal rights and environmental movements of the early '80s, and the concerns we shared then have only become stronger. Our aim has always been to express themes from the natural world in relation to human experience via our personal symbolic language. More recently, we find ourselves exploring the ways in which humankind can repair the damage inflicted on the planet via rewilding. Hipkiss is represented in the collections of the The Met, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Cindy Sherman, John Michael Kohler Art Center, FRAC Occitanie, FRAC Picardie, Antoine de Galbert and The Whitworth, among others. Exhibitions include the Drawing Center, David Zwirner, La Maison Rouge, New Museum, The Irish Museum of Modern Art, La Caixa, Tate Britain, Whitechapel, and The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art. Four-times recipients of the Pollock-Krasner Award.
