"Bodyscapes" are not about the body. They are about reality and consciousness and perception. I began this work to express in art, what I had been teaching and studying as a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and Boston University. I had searched for a way to show that two realities could co-exist and that both could be valid at the same time. Also - I was emphasizing the fact that our perceptions are subjective and we can choose to perceive the world in a variety of ways. They are an example of the gestalt psychology concept of figure-ground reversal. Actually -they are a play on that concept, as here the "figure" (the body), becomes the "ground" or the landscape! Most of the images were shot on film. The more recent ones are shot digitally. In all of my work, I do NOT use photoshop to create the images. Rather, small toys are placed on the model's body and photographed together in a single exposure. All of my work has grown out of my study of psychology of consciousness, mysticism, and meditation. Another body of work has been hand colored black and white photographs - expressing a timeless moment, the energy of stillness. . . where little action is shown but where all the people who could have been to that place are represented by the energy of the place. Another body of work explores psychological and spiritual themes through photo collage and transfers of antique photographs. I would like to show the bodyscape photographs as a group - so that the various parts of the body can be seen to replicate the various features of the landscape. As in the holographic model of the universe, we see that the same shapes repeat themselves at every level of reality.
